Men vs Women vs Society
Through many centuries, all over the globe men were the dominating force. All societies were male dominated in most cases. Women couldn't vote and were expected not to draw attention to themselves by wearing revealing clothing. They had to stay inside. When the 1920s rolled around, all the Women's Rights movements had come to gain them voting rights; even if the majority of the male population thought it was wrong for them to have rights.
But the United States couldn't just stop working after all the men went to fight in World War 1. Women were moved to higher paying jobs in offices or out in the field. They weren't staying home to do as they 'should have' been doing. Most women were not even hired during the 1920s either, but the positions needed to be filled with anyone a business could find.
Retailing and fashion became popular profession for women in this time. Helena Rubinstein was a woman who opened her own business for beauty creams and make up. She said, "it was not easy being a hard-working woman in a man's world."
Paintings and novels were being published from the hands of women, but some pieces of work were never shown. Men kept some woman artists from ever letting their work get published. Some novels weren't published by companies because it was written by a woman. Some art showcases wouldn't show paintings by women. Their quality of work wasn't recognized because of their gender.
